The Schubert Ensemble have for 25 years been at the forefront of the British chamber music scene. Alongside Schubert's ever-popular Trout Quintet, they bring Vaughan Williams' Piano Quintet (an early work only recently published) to mark the 50th anniversary of the composer's death, and a recent work by Anthony Powers which they premiered at the Wigmore Hall in February this year.
From reviews of their new Vaughan Williams CD, including the Piano Quintet:
These superb players then impress even more in the early, very Brahmsian, Piano Quintet: the playing here has serious power, plus the loveliest range of light and shade.
Classic FM, June 2008The Quintet is striking...I've come to like it immensely over several playings of this recording.
